Installing Network Monitor
Network Monitor is a free protocol analyzer, or network sniffer, available from Microsoft. It is used to capture and analyze network traffic. At the time of writing this, the current version is 3.4. You can download and install it on Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2 with the steps in the following table.
Tip
The free version of Network Monitor in previous versions of Windows was limited. It didn’t work in promiscuous mode and captured only traffic sent to or from the collecting computer. However, Network Monitor version 3.x does work in promiscuous mode. The last section in this chapter talks about promiscuous mode and how to enable it.
