Chapter 1. Configuring IPv4 and IPv6 Addressing

This chapter covers the following subjects:

• Concepts of TCP/IP: TCP/IP is a complex stack of related networking protocols. This section introduces the various protocols involved and explains their relationship with one another.

• IPv4 Addressing: Version 4 of the IP protocol has been used for many years and is still common today. This section describes the 32-bit IPv4 address classes and shows you how to configure your computer for IPv4 addressing.

• IPv6 Addressing: With the increasing large number of computers and other devices that connect to the Internet, IPv4 is running out of addresses. The 128-bit IP version 6 was developed to alleviate this problem. In this section, you are introduced to the various types of IPv6 addresses that are available. You then learn how to configure your computer with IPv6 and connect to other computers using either IPv4 or IPv6.
