Chapter 7. Configuring DNS Records

Chapter 7. Configuring DNS Records

This chapter covers the following subjects:

Resource Record Types and Their Uses: Resource records in DNS contain all the information required for DNS servers to resolve client queries. This section introduces the most common record types and shows you how to create them.

Configuring Resource Record Properties: This section introduces you to the various configurable properties of the different resource record types, in particular the SOA and NS records. It also discusses additional tasks you need to be familiar with concerning resource records, such as configuring the Time-to-Live parameter, registering records, netmask ordering, DNS record security, and so on.

Reviewing what you know about the Domain Name System (DNS) so far, you learned in Chapter 5, “Installing and Configuring Domain Name System (DNS),” how DNS resolves domain names to their corresponding IP addresses. You also learned how to install DNS on a Windows Server 2008 computer and configure server properties. Chapter 6, “Configuring DNS Zones and Replication,” turned your attention to how the zone files in DNS work and the importance of replicating this data to all available DNS servers. Now, it is time to take a look at the contents of these zones. Each DNS zone contains a series of entries known as resource records, which contain information about a particular component of the DNS namespace. When a DNS server receives a query from a client, it depends on the resource records in its database to be able to answer the query with the appropriate information.
