Resource Record Types and Their Uses

Each zone file contains a series of entries known as resource records for a DNS domain. If your zone is certguide.com, your zone database file is called certguide.com.dns. A copy of this database is stored at %systemroot%\System32\dns\backup. Windows Server 2008 supplies a sample database file called place.dns, located in the %systemroot%\System32\dns\Samples folder, as a template. This file is duplicated and renamed whenever you create a new zone using the New Zone Wizard. In doing so, the minimum resource records that are required for a new zone to function are automatically placed in the zone file.

Table 7-2 contains descriptions of the most common resource records found in the zone file.
