Chapter 3. Migrating to SQL Server 2005 Business Intelligence Components

Chapter 3. Migrating to SQL Server 2005 Business Intelligence Components

For the business intelligence (BI) components of SQL Server, moving from SQL Server 2000 to SQL Server 2005 is not simply a matter of backing up the BI-related objects on the old version, installing the new version, and restoring the objects. There are significant architectural differences between the old and new versions of some of the BI components, particularly with SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS) and SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS), which replaces SQL Server 2000’s Data Transformation Services (DTS). SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) has a more straightforward upgrade path because the previous version was introduced in 2003, after SQL Server 2000, and so was built more in line with the SQL Server 2005 architecture. So this chapter will only cover the paths for migrating from SSAS 2000 to SSAS 2005 and from SQL Server 2000 DTS to SQL Server 2005 SSIS.
