Dial-Up Remote Access Clients

The two main communication protocols used by dial-up remote access clients are the Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) and the Serial Line Internet Protocol (SLIP). PPP has become an industry-standard communications protocol because of its popularity.

Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) has become the predominant protocol for modem-based access to the Internet, and provides full-duplex, bi-directional operations between the host and the private network. Furthermore, a multilink version of PPP is also used to access ISDN lines, inverse multiplexing analog phone lines, and high-speed optical lines.
