1.6. Project Life Cycles and Project Management Processes

Most projects begin with an idea. After soliciting support and obtaining approval, a project progresses through the intermediate phases to the ending phase, where it is completed and closed out. As a project passes through this life cycle, it is carried out through a set of project management processes. These processes are interrelated and dependent on one another, and are divided into five project management process groups:

  • Initiating

  • Planning

  • Executing

  • Monitoring and controlling
