If you can correctly answer these questions before going through this section, save time by skimming the Exam Alerts in this section and then completing the Cram Quiz at the end of the section.

1.At what points in a project might you perform the processes of initiating a project?

  1. Initiating is the first process group and occurs only at the beginning of a project.

  1. Initiating should actually be named “phase initiation” and really only occurs during execution between major project phases.

  1. Initiating must occur at the beginning of a project and before any major milestone to authorize the project to continue toward the next milestone.

  1. Initiating can occur at the beginning of a project and again at any point when authorization to continue the project is either required or desired.

2.Which document formally authorizes a project?

  1. The project sponsor/initiator charter

  1. The project charter

  1. The preliminary project scope statement

  1. The project contract

Answers

1.Answer D is correct. Initiating a project or phase generally occurs at the beginning of a project and can also optionally be included multiple times throughout the project. There are no absolute requirements for conducting initiating processes during a project. Because initiating can occur during a project but is not required, answers A, B, and C are incorrect.
2.Answer B is correct. Answer A mentions a document that is not defined in the PMBOK. The preliminary scope statement is a document defined in the PMBOK Guide, Third Edition, but not the Fourth Edition, so Answer C is incorrect. The project contract is one of the inputs to both processes in the project initiation process group and does not convey project authorization, which means Answer D is incorrect. The contract does commit the organization to perform action but does not authorize the project itself.
