Certification Objective 9.02: Enable a Fault-Tolerant Virtual Machine

Fault-Tolerant virtual machines are used by vSphere to enable greater uptime for a virtual machine by essentially creating a copy of the virtual machine and switching control to the copy in the event of a failure of the Host where the original VM resides or a failure of the virtual machine itself. High Availability would have the ability to restart the virtual machine on another Host, but there would be downtime on the virtual machine. Using Fault Tolerance, this downtime is greatly reduced.

In this section we will work with Fault-Tolerant virtual machines. We will review the requirements for Fault Tolerance and look at various usage cases for it. We will then set up a Fault Tolerance network and verify the operating system requirements for Fault Tolerance. Once you understand all of the requirements, we will enable and test Fault Tolerance for a virtual machine. We will end the section by discussing the special requirements for upgrading ESX Hosts that contain Fault-Tolerant virtual machines.
