32 Campaign It! week of messaging was based on the hope that would be created both by a `Yes' vote in Scotland and a direct appeal by Tony Blair. The first result in was Wrexham and although `No' won we got a far bigger vote than had been anticipated at the start. We did badly in Newport and Monmouthshire just as we expected. Turnout was decent in the south Wales Valleys seats, as we planned. It went right down to the last of the 22 local authority areas to report before the winner was known. The final result was that `Yes' won by 50.3 per cent to 49.7 per cent on a 50.1 per cent turnout. More than 1.1 million people had voted and we had a majority of 6,721. It was close but the campaign had delivered enough votes. A win's a win, but I also knew that people are motivated to vote against something far more easily than they are motivated to vote for it. The `No' campaign would have maximized their opposition to the Assembly. Those who didn't vote weren't against it, else they most certainly would have voted to stop it. They were either willing to go with the consensus, were prepared to see how it went once it was up and running or simply didn't care. It was a just result. Wales got what it wanted, and history can already judge that in Wales there is a new sense of pride in the Welsh identity and confidence in their country as a result.
