52 Campaign It! Cause, objectives and a washing line Although a cause is far more than just a rational objective, every cause is realized through the setting and achievement of a range of objectives. According to Margaret McDonagh (General Secretary of the Labour Party 1998 to 2001): `Cause is the big thing, the Dream. An objective is something you have to achieve to realize the cause. Generally you have a cause to achieve something bigger and this then funnels itself down into specifics.' Margaret uses the image of a washing line to show the relationship between cause and the objectives and policies of the campaign. In the same way that clothes are hung on a washing line so the specifics of the campaign, the objectives and what Margaret refers to `symbolic policies', are `hung' from the line created by the cause and its associated messages.
