5. Preparing Yourself > The Myth of Winging It

THE MYTH OF WINGING IT

I love spontaneity. I’ve sat in on presentations by people who seemed to be so comfortable that I could swear they were having a conversation with the audience, even if none of us were talking. They just seemed that relaxed and present.

Have you ever heard someone say about a hair style, “It takes me hours to achieve this casual windblown look?” The same goes for presentations. It takes a lot of hard work to make something appear “off-the-cuff.”

I’ve sat on presentations where the speaker wanted to appear spontaneous but was instead demonstrating a complete lack of preparation. Since I am a presenter myself, I felt uncomfortable for them.

I have learned, in delivering presentations or facilitating groups in general, that my comfort level is built on a foundation of preparation. I can appear totally at ease, and totally engaged with my audience, if I am not mentally floundering around trying to figure out what to say next. The presentation has at some level to be second nature so that I can let my true nature come forth during the presentation. Preparation is the only way you can be spontaneous.
