What decade were we in, anyway? What was going on here? Nostalgic for nostalgia The word `nostalgia' comes from the Greek compounds `nostos' ­ meaning `to come home' ­ and `algos', or pain. It was coined in 1688 by a Swiss doctor, Johannes Hofer, in reference to a bizarre malady affecting Swiss nationals stationed overseas (homesickness, basically) that Dr Hofer believed could ultimately lead to widespread desertions and even death. In our modern parlance, however, it's generally used to refer to, as The Oxford English Dictionary puts it, `a sentimental longing or wistful affection for the past'.
