16.9. Managing the Accumulation of Log Data

A potential disadvantage when you set up a field in each table to capture user edits is that in solutions where data changes frequently, the history of edits and previous field values can accumulate, adding significantly to the size of the file and thereby impacting performance. In fact, the volume of data associated with logging each record's history is necessarily larger than the current data in the solution. In addition, while audit data is stored in a single text block within each record, you can't readily search or sort it.

You can mitigate both these shortcomings by periodically archiving audit data to a separate table and/or file for reference.
