Chapter 9. Putting It All Together: Sample Backup Environments

So far, all the elements of a backup environment have been discussed: target media, backup software, and applications. Now it is time to put them all together into some sample solutions, based on backup architecture, specifically as they relate to the size of the environment. These sample environments take a number of different factors into consideration and build on the concepts and functionality that has been previously laid out. However, they only provide a starting point. The configurations of backup environments are as varied as the number of environments: everyone has specific considerations that need to be accounted for within the design. Additionally, as the sample designs grow, notice that the designs are not focused so much on adding capacity (that is accounted for in a horizontal scalability model), but more on adding features to meet specific needs.
