14.9 Case Study: Lost Time Occupational Injuries

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) records, among many other things, information on occupational illnesses and injuries by a number of factors including type of injury, age of worker, experience level, type of industry, etc.

Business Problem

A fast food outlet that would be classified by the BLS as a "service provider" wants to assess its recent experience with musculoskeletal injuries among workers aged 30 years or less. The most recent data available from the BLS shows that nationwide, in private industry, workers in this age group have an average of five lost workdays due to musculoskeletal injuries. The file Occupationallnjuries.jmp contains the fast food outlet's injury data for the calendar year.
