Distribution of a Categorical Variable

In its reporting, the United Nations identifies each country of the world with a continental region. There are six such regions, each with a different number of countries. The variable Region is nominal—it literally names a country's general location on earth. Suppose we want to know what the different regions are and how many countries are located in each. In other words, suppose was want to know the distribution of Region.

  1. Select Analyze → Distribution. In the Distribution dialog box (Figure 3.1), select the variable Region as the Y, Columns variable. Do this either by highlighting the variable and clicking the Y, Columns button, or by dragging the word Region into the Y, Columns box. Click OK.
