Pareto Charts

Yet another simple charting tool for attribute data is known as a Pareto chart. A Pareto chart is a bar chart showing the frequency or relative frequency of specific attributes, often those representing some type of process or product defect. The bars in the chart are always sorted from most to least frequent to draw attention to the most commonly occurring problems. Additionally, Pareto charts display the cumulative relative frequency of the various problem categories, to enable managers to identify the critical few issues that account for the greatest proportion of defects.

To illustrate, let's look back at the pipeline disruption data. We've analyzed the data previously, focusing on several different variables. This time, we'll examine the reported types of pipeline disruptions.
