Chapter 11. Securing Report Server Content > Implementing Data Security

Implementing Data Security

It’s important to remember that giving a user access to a report does not necessarily mean that a user has access to the data retrieved by the dataset queries. If you’re using Windows integrated security, then you must also give users Read permission on the source data.

Furthermore, when you need to give users access to the same report but must manage how much data displays in the report for each user, you must implement data security. There are several ways to implement data security, but all methods achieve the same result. Consider, for example, the Reseller Sales Margin Analysis By Sales Territory report in the Sales folder. This report includes a parameter that allows the user to view data for all sales territories or to select one or more specific sales territories. You can configure security to allow the VP to view all sales territories, and then limit the data in the report to the Europe sales territory data for the EuropeMgr and to the Pacific sales territory data for the PacificMgr. In this section, you explore three different ways to restrict data to specific sales territories by user.
