About the Authors

Michael McLaughlin is a professor of Computer Information Technology at Brigham Young University-Idaho. He is also an Oracle ACE. Michael has worked with the Oracle product stack for 20 years as a developer, DBA, and E-Business Suite Applications DBA.

Michael left Oracle as the Senior Upgrade Manager in Release Engineering for the Oracle Applications Division. He worked at Oracle for more than eight years in consulting, support, and development. He is the inventor of the ATOMS transaction architecture (U.S. Patents #7,206,805 and #7,290,056). The patents are assigned to Oracle Corporation.

He is the author of six books on Oracle technology, including Oracle Database 11g PL/SQL Programming and Oracle Database 10g PL/SQL Programming.

Michael and his wife Lisa have been married for over 20 years and they have nine children. They live in Idaho near Yellowstone National Park.

John Harper lives with his wife of more than 19 years in Northern Utah County, Utah. They have one adopted daughter whom they cherish and thoroughly spoil. He has been working with databases for the past 11 years, specializing in Oracle administration, schema design, PL/SQL, and information quality.

He currently works for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as the lead and senior information quality engineer. He enjoys working with data warehousing, business intelligence, and database engineers there. His mentors include Michael McLaughlin and Robert Freeman. His wife says that he wants to be like Tom Kyte when he grows up—well, Tom, and Robert, and Mike to mention just a few.

In his spare time, John enjoys martial arts. During his teenage and early adulthood, he learned JuJitsu, Karate, Judo, and Aikido. He loves Aikido and hopes to teach it one day. He would also love to learn Kyudo if he can find any spare time.

About the Technical Editor

Joseph McLaughlin is a student at Brigham Young University-Idaho studying computer information technology and Chinese. He’s an avid Objective C programmer on the iPhone. Joseph also devotes a great deal of time to web development standards and methods. He enjoys computers, programming, hiking, biking, and spending time with his family.

To Lisa, my eternal companion, inspiration, wife, and best friend; and to our children, Sarah, Joseph, Elise, Ian, Ariel, Callie, Nathan, Spencer, and Christianne, who supported me like the champions they are throughout the writing process.

Michael McLaughlin

To my wife and daughter, who exhibited ultimate patience, kindness, and love as I pounded through this project. To my extended family and colleagues, who could practically recite each chapter after reading them so many times.

John Harper
