Chapter 1. Business Application Developm... > Bringing Us to...Enterprise 2.0

Bringing Us to...Enterprise 2.0

Now that developers have the framework to build their applications and the architecture to build true composite applications, we’ve arrived at Enterprise 2.0. For users, Enterprise 2.0 is about transforming how people work and interact with applications and with each other—to become more collaborative and interactive and to keep desired and vital information available at their fingertips. For businesses, it’s about giving companies the ability to keep up with trends and daily requirements without disrupting business processes or increasing IT costs. For developers, it’s about making it easy to develop rich, customized applications to serve their users, integrate with existing business applications, and keep maintenance to a minimum. Both Oracle ADF and SOA enable developers to achieve some of these goals, and the methodology of coupling these has resulted in Enterprise 2.0.

Oracle is spearheading Enterprise 2.0 development with ADF, which combines the capabilities of traditional transactional applications with the capabilities of composite applications to enable the creation of next-generation applications and portals. However, while Oracle ADF provides a standardized, organized, and extremely feature-rich approach to application development, there still remains a gap: how do developers pull together the myriad Web 2.0 features their users and businesses have come to rely on in their day-to-day environments and integrate these into their Enterprise 2.0 applications? How do they provide enterprise portal capabilities that their users are so accustomed to enjoying in their daily workspaces? This is where Oracle WebCenter enters the picture.
