The architecture of PHP applications using Oracle Database Express Edition requires three components be installed on the server machine: Oracle Database Express Edition, Apache HTTPD, and PHP. They are small enough that they may also be installed on a developer’s laptop. This chapter describes the installation and configuration for the Red Hat Advanced Server and Windows XP Professional operating systems.
The installation programs work differently between Linux and Windows. For example, you can make a text-based menu-driven installation using Zend Core for Oracle on Linux, while a Microsoft Windows Installer is provided for Windows XP. Choices follow more or less the same sequence in both installations. Naturally, you may opt to install PHP manually from www.php.net rather than install Zend Core for Oracle, or you may substitute Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS) for Apache HTTPD.
