CHAPTER 8: Parsing > Working Around Parsing Problems

Working Around Parsing Problems

The previous sections described three test cases related to quick parses. The first is simply a case of poor code writing. The second is much better than the first. The third is the best in most situations. The dilemma is that code has to be modified in order to enhance it, and that, unfortunately, is not always possible. This is either because the code is not available, because of technical barriers (for example, prepared statements are not available in the programming environment), or simply because it is too "expensive" to make all the necessary modifications.

The following sections explain how to work around such problems in order to achieve results similar to those reached by carrying out the right implementation. Even if the performance of such workarounds is not as good as that possible with a correct implementation, in some situations the workaround is much better than doing nothing at all.
