What You Will Do in This Workshop

In this workshop, you will:

Image Confirm that your host system meets the basic system requirements to function as a database server.

Image Configure your host system to prepare for an installation of the Enterprise Edition of the database.

The exercises in this workshop exist in two entirely separate tracks. One applies to the MS Windows operating system and the other to a Linux/Unix platform. You should only follow the exercise track which applies to the platform in use for your workshop host system.

Even within the track applicable to your operating system platform, you will need to modify our solutions to conform to what is required for the specific implementation of MS Windows, Linux or Unix which is running on your host system.

MS WINDOWS CONFIGURATION-1

Image Confirm the following attributes for the host system on which you will perform the database installation, and ensure that these meet the requirements for a database server.

  • Operating system platform
  • Processor speed
  • Physical memory
  • Virtual memory
  • Available disk space
MS WINDOWS CONFIGURATION-2

Image Define the environment variable ORACLE_HOSTNAME to conform to your host system name.

LINUX CONFIGURATION-1

Image Confirm the following attributes for the host system on which you will perform the database installation, and ensure that these meet the requirements for a database server.

  • Operating system platform
  • Platform kernel
  • Physical memory
  • Virtual memory
  • Available disk space
LINUX CONFIGURATION-2

Image Connect as the root user and define the environment variable ORACLE_HOSTNAME to conform to your host system name.

LINUX CONFIGURATION-3

Image Define the following objects on your system:

  • The system groups oinstall, dba, oper, nobody
  • The user oracle, with oinstall as the primary group and dba and oper as the secondary groups
  • Assign a password to the oracle user
LINUX CONFIGURATION-4

Image Perform the required shell configuration for the oracle user.

LINUX CONFIGURATION-5

Image The next step is configure kernel and other operating system parameters. One must also install the required operating system packages. If you wish, you may consult the lecture section for specifics on how this might be done. However, our suggestion would be to allow the FixUp utility to assist you in doing so during the actual installation.

LINUX CONFIGURATION-6

Image Create the ORACLE_BASE directory and assign the appropriate owner and permissions to the directory.
