Introduction
A major strength of SAS is its ability to work with character data. The SAS character functions are essential to this. The collection of functions and CALL routines in this chapter enable you to do extensive manipulation on all sorts of character data.
With the introduction of SAS®9, the number of functions increased greatly (especially character functions). In addition, many of the new character functions included arguments that refer to character classes (such as all digits or all punctuation), making them even more powerful.
