This chapter introduces the basic syntax of the most commonly used SQL statement, which is the SELECT statement. The SQL SELECT statement retrieves data from the database. The SELECT statement does not change the data that’s stored in the database, but it does have the ability to transform that data as it is pulled out of the database and displayed, and therein lies its power and usefulness. SELECT has the ability to show raw information, but also to edit information before it’s displayed.
