MCDN

The Microcellular Data Network (MCDN) was invented by the U.S. company Metricom, who also operate it under the brand name Ricochet. It offers far higher speeds than any other data-only technology, because it was designed specifically for Internet access.

Uniquely for a mobile data technology, Ricochet is marketed as a direct competitor to fixed technologies. Customers can buy an access device for their PC, pay a flat rate per month, and can then access the Internet at ISDN-like speeds anywhere within the coverage area.
