REAL TIME REQUIREMENTS

The sensed data should reflect the physical status of the sensing environment (Felemban et al., 2005). Because sensor data could be valid only for limited time duration, it needs to be delivered within a time bound. Different sensed data could have different deadlines depending on the dynamics and nature of the sensed environment. In order to reach a better understanding of these requirements, we describe two of the most common metrics used to define real time requirement:

Latency: Is defined as the time length between the occurrence of an event and its detection at Sink level. In surveillance and control applications, event detection needs to be reported in real time so that appropriate action can be taken as soon as possible (Lu et al., 2004).
