Chapter 6. Disaster Recovery Deployments > Recovering from a Multiple-Role Fail...

Recovering from a Multiple-Role Failure on the Same Server

Because nearly all of the configuration information and settings for Mailbox, Client Access, Hub Transport, and Unified Messaging server roles are stored in Active Directory, you can leverage that information to rebuild a failed server. The Setup parameter used is the /m:RecoverServer option.

The information stored in the Active Directory about the failed server is used to re-create a new server (on either the same or alternate hardware as the failed server). The replacement server, although given a new security identifier (SID), is recognized by both the Exchange organization and the Active Directory as the old server, as if it never failed. In addition, this could be used in a planned scenario to replace an older server.
