In Chapter 7, “Coexisting with Previous Versions of Exchange Server,” you learned about your coexistence options between Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 and Exchange Server 2007. Coexistence is the first step in a full transition to Exchange Server 2007. Because Exchange Server 2007 does not support a direct in-place upgrade mechanism from older versions of Exchange, your transition project plan must include a coexistence phase. This book assumes that your coexistence phase does not include migrating mailboxes or changing any of your SMTP connectors to the outside world. In short, it is assumed that you simply brought up your first Exchange Server 2007 server, followed the details provided in the previous chapter, and then made your way to this chapter.
