1.8. Border Routers

The border routers are the first point of contact that the outside world has with your network. These components are also the first line in your defensive strategy, in addition to providing redundant links to the Internet.

1.8.1. Function

Border routers provide routing for packets going to and from the Internet and your hosted network. They should support modern routing protocols such as Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) for load balancing and efficient packet delivery.
