The Rise of Free Agency

The Great Recession accelerated a trend that has been building globally—that of individuals leaving large organizations to create their own. It has extended even to less-developed economies where micro-lending, for example, has made it possible for increasing numbers of people to finance their own small businesses.

This raises the question of whether and how free agents—representing themselves and their own best interests—may be induced to subscribe to a given set of values and behaviors. Several large organizations, for example, have experimented with the issuance of stock to the free agents with whom they deal as a means of aligning the interests of both organizations. Others utilize customer surveys as a means of tracking the quality of work performed on their behalf by free agents.
