Part I: BASIC CONCEPTS > Goal-setting and Planning

Chapter 3. Goal-setting and Planning

Once you get committed to the sport you have chosen, you should set your goals and also identify the challenges you have to face. Every goal should be realistic and spelt out in clear terms. The stages through which you can achieve your goal should be worked out and described in lucid terms. Your analyses about your present capabilities and how you can develop further the ability required should also be very clear. Just having a vague goal and not planning the efforts properly will lead you nowhere. Writing down the goals will give you a good idea about the efforts required and their direction.

The long-term goals should be finalized first, before you get down to fixing the short-term goals and the various stages that have to be achieved. Becoming the world champion or winning the Olympic Gold can be a very attractive goal, but to achieve it you will have to start winning the local competitions and then come to the state- and national-level events. You will have to qualify yourself for participating in world championships or the Olympics.
