Optional: Choose a large display size for your document so you'll be able to decipher words easily, and make the window smaller so it scrolls quickly.

Open (or close) the auxiliary dictionary that was last used with the document, if any. You can also create a new auxiliary dictionary.

Choose the Content tool.

Do one of the following:

To check the spelling of a word or selection, click in a word or highlight some text, then choose Utilities > Check Spelling > Word or Selection (Cmd-L/Ctrl-W). Single-letter words (e.g., “a”) won't be checked.

To check spelling in a story, click in the story. Then choose Utilities > Check Spelling > Story (Cmd-Option-L/Ctrl-Alt-W).

To check spelling in a document, choose Utilities > Check Spelling > Document (Cmd-Option-Shift-L/Ctrl-Alt-Shift-W). Spelling will automatically be checked from the beginning of the document.

To check spelling on a master page, display that master page, then choose Utilities > Check Spelling > Masters (Cmd-Option-Shift-L/Ctrl-Alt-Shift-W).

When the Word Count dialog box appears, click OK .

This is the Total number of words in the story.

Do any of the following:

If words similar to the current Suspect Word are found in the QuarkXPress dictionary or in an open auxiliary dictionary, those words will appear on the scroll list, and the program's best guess as an appropriate or likely substitute word will be highlighted. Double-click one of the replacement words on the scroll list , if any are listed. Or click a word on the scroll list, then click Replace. Click Lookup (Cmd-L/Alt-L), if available, to see an expanded list of potential substitute words. If no similar words are found in the QuarkXPress dictionary or in an open auxiliary dictionary, the Look up button will be grayed out .

Correct the spelling of the recommended replacement word or enter a different word in the Replace With field, then click Replace (Alt-R in Windows).

or

Click Skip (Cmd-S/Alt-S) to skip over the current word entirely.

or

Click Add to add the Suspect Word to the currently open auxiliary dictionary.

To end the check spelling process at any time, click Done/Close (Cmd-. (period)/Esc.
