There are several ways to produce fractions in QuarkXPress:
Use any character set, press Alt-0190 to produce ¾ (Press Alt-0188 for ¼ or Alt-0189 for ½)
Install and enable Quark, Inc.'s Type Tricks XTension, type the numerator, a slash, and the denominator, highlight all the characters, then choose Style menu > Type Style > Make Fraction. You'll produce a fraction that looks like this: ¾. You can kern between the characters in this type of fraction. Choose Fraction/Price preferences in Edit menu > Preferences > Fraction/Price.
A third method—building a fraction by hand—requires more steps. Type the numerator, type Alt-0164, type the denominator, apply the Superior style to the numerator, select the symbol between the numbers and change the font to Symbol (it turns into a virgule), and finally, divide the point size of the denominator in half. This is what you get: ¾.
