Almost everything I’ve talked about in this chapter has been at a character or paragraph level. Here I’m going to talk about making typographic adjustments on a layout level. You have control over several areas at a layout level, including how traditional (non OpenType) superscript, subscript, superior, and small-caps characters are “built”; which words will hyphenate; and how QuarkXPress deals with ligatures, accents, and special spaces. You can also create custom automatic tracking and kerning tables, and run through an automatic check for typographic problem areas.
