Composing Music

The iPad’s large touch screen lends itself nicely to music creation. The Pianist Pro app gives you a large keyboard on the screen and many instruments you can simulate. You can also add a drum track and record tracks on top of each other.

1.
Tap the keyboard keys to play notes.

2.
Tap the Drums button to turn on the drum simulator and get a beat.

3.
Tap the Record button to start recording.

4.
Play notes while the app records what you play.

5.
Tap the Record button again to stop recording.

6.
Tap the arrows to the left or right of the instrument name to change the instrument.

7.
Repeat steps 3 through 5 to record another track on top of what you already have.

8.
Tap the Settings button.

9.
Tap the Drums button to see the drum loop editor. Tap the squares to alter the looping pattern.

10.
Tap Current to change the strength of the sound you are applying to squares you tap.

11.
Select a preset drum pattern.

12.
Change the instrument set used by the pattern.

A Simpler Musical Instrument App

If you are looking for a simpler musical instrument app, check out Accordèon. It is a single-screen accordion simulator. It might not have all the features of Pianist Pro, but if you hold your iPad like an accordion and play, it will surely turn some heads. How long before you see buskers playing iPads to make spare change?
