Acknowledgments As I get to the end of a book project, I become more like a hermit in a cave, singularly focused on getting everything done on a tight schedule. But books can't happen in isolation, and I was fortunate enough to have these wonder- ful people just outside the cave entrance, waiting with positive words and, on occasion, dessert. This book exists because of the wonderful patience and encouragement from my wife, Kim, and my daughter, Ellie. My editor Cliff Colby shepherded the project from the beginning, while David Van Ness, Scout Festa, and Valerie Perry put their amazing talents to work to create a high-quality finished product. Agen G. N. Schmitz updated Chapter 7 in the previous edition of this book, and I forgot to list him in the acknowledgments then. So, just in case I blank out in the future: Agen G. N. Schmitz, Agen G. N. Schmitz, Agen G. N. Schmitz. He's also been a great late-night virtual officemate as we've tackled several independent projects this year. Several people at Apple helped with answers to my questions, including Janette Barrios, Keri Walker, Monica Sarkar, Lacey Haines, and Simon Pope. My colleague Glenn Fleishman continues to be the best officemate, sounding board, and friend a guy could have. Heidi Blondin and Bert Hopkins, and their son, Logan, proved to be the Best Neighbors Ever for watching Ellie at a few crucial deadline crunches. I'd like to say I had the idea first, but Scott Knaster inspired the caption for Figure 7.18. About Jeff Carlson Jeff Carlson gave up an opportunity to intern at a design firm during college because they really just wanted someone tall to play on their volleyball team. In the intervening years, he's been a designer and writer, authoring best-selling books on the Macintosh, Web design, video editing, and digital photography. He's currently a columnist for the Seattle Times and a senior editor of TidBITS (www.tidbits.com), and he consumes almost too much coffee--almost. Find more information about him at jeffcarlson.com and neverenoughcoffee.com, and follow him on Twitter at @jeffcarlson.
