Updating Your Phone

Windows Phone 7 is a full operating system, with a team of designers and programmers constantly working on new features, fixing bugs, and refining the software so that you get the best experience. However, these new features and fixes would mean nothing if there wasn’t a way for you to update your phone to get the best possible experience. This chapter covers the Windows Phone 7 update feature, including how to check for an update and install it if one is available for your phone.

If you used a previous version of Windows Mobile, the predecessor to Windows Phone 7, you may have applied an update once or twice to your phone. While each update brought new features, it also wiped your phone, requiring you to re-install all of your applications and settings. Updates were also distributed through your wireless carrier, which meant that updates for two identical phones might be available months apart, simply because one was on Carrier A, while the other was on Carrier B. With Windows Phone 7, those two issues are eliminated. Updates no longer wipe the phone, and Microsoft is distributing the updates directly!
