Add the Thermocouple
Next, you're going to attach the thermocouple, a device that will allow the temperature of the heater core to be monitored by another piece of electronics (more on that in Chapter 17). For now, however, all you need to gather are the thermocouple wire, the small Allen screw, the M2 washer, and a #6 washer (see Figure 14-17). You'll also need about 1” or so of Kapton tape to wrap around the end of the thermocouple.
Note Technical editor Darrell Kelly had this to say about attaching the thermocouple using the small washers: “I took this washer and with a pair of pliers bent it on one side not quite through the middle. This formed a small clamping area for the thermocouple to fit into. I was able to mount the thermocouple on the first try without any trouble. The washer is easy to bend when held with pliers and pushed against a piece of wood or countertop.
