4. iCloud Downloads > Re-download Previous Purchases

Re-download Previous Purchases

The methods for re-downloading previous purchases are similar, but not identical, on iOS devices and in iTunes on a Mac or PC.

Re-download on an iOS Device

On an iOS device, do the following to re-download purchased media:

  1. Go to the appropriate app and display your purchases:

    • Music, TV shows, and movies:

      1. Go to the iTunes app.

      2. Tap Purchased at the bottom of the screen.

      3. Tap Music, TV Shows, or Movies to display that media category.

    • Apps:

      1. Go to the App Store app.

      2. Tap Purchased at the bottom of the screen.

    • Books:

      1. Go to the iBooks app.

      2. If you’re currently viewing a book, tap anywhere on the page.

      3. Tap Library to display your library.

      4. Tap Store.

      5. Tap Purchased at the bottom of the screen.

  2. Tap Not On This Device Name (if present) to filter the display so it shows only items in your chosen category that have been purchased but aren’t currently on the device you’re holding.

  3. Find the item you want to download. You may have to scroll, search, or page through various options, depending on how many items there are. To download an item, tap the download button next to it. (In some cases, you can tap a Download All button to download everything on the screen—for example, a whole album or playlist.) Enter your password if prompted to do so. The item(s) begin downloading immediately.

Note

Pixels aplenty: For TV shows and movies purchased in HD, you may be prompted to choose whether to download the HD or SD version.

For music, you can also re-download items right from within the Music app. Note the following:

  • As you browse in the Music app, an artist, album, or playlist whose tracks have not all been downloaded to your device displays a cloud icon.

  • As in the iTunes app, to download an item, tap the download button next to it. (You can tap Download All to download everything on the screen—for example, a whole album or playlist.) Enter your password if prompted to do so. The item(s) begin downloading immediately.

  • A track that’s in the process of downloading displays a round progress button. To stop the download in progress, tap this button.

  • If you tap the name of a track that’s in the cloud (not the download button), the Music app streams it (playing it as it downloads).

Re-download in iTunes

On a Mac or PC, do the following to re-download purchased media:

  1. Open iTunes and click the iTunes Store button in the upper-right corner. (If there’s a Library button there instead, you’re already in the iTunes Store.)

  2. Click a category (such as Music or Movies) and then, beneath Category Name Quick Links on the right, click the Purchased link.

  3. In the upper-right of the window, click Not on This Computer to restrict the display to those items that aren’t currently on your Mac or PC.

  4. To locate an item, you can:

    • Search for the item you want by typing text in the Search Purchased Items field.

    • Use the Sort By pop-up menu to determine the order in which items are displayed.

    • Click Songs or Albums (for Music) or Seasons or Episodes (for TV Shows) to determine how the items are grouped.

    • Browse music by selecting All Songs or All Albums, or browse TV shows by selecting All TV Seasons or All TV Episodes. If applicable, select Recent Purchases (in the list on the left) to narrow your choices; or navigate by selecting an artist or show in the list.

    • For apps, filter the display by device (such as iPhone/iPad).

  5. Once you’ve found an item you want to download, click the download button next to it. Or, to download everything currently showing in the window, click the Download All button at the bottom. (For TV shows, double-click a season name to view all the shows within that season and see the Download All button.)

Note

Highly defined: For TV shows and movies, you can optionally select Download HD When Available to ensure that in cases where you purchased high-definition (HD) content, you download the highest quality version. Or, deselect that checkbox to download only standard definition video (which downloads more quickly and takes up less space).

iTunes downloads the selected item(s), and the download button changes, for each item, to a Downloaded button.
