Lesson 13. Advanced Moviemaking > Setting a Location Using Travel Maps

Setting a Location Using Travel Maps

Once again, you are faced with the question of how to start this project. You’ve used various techniques and content including titles, photos, and sound effects; but one of the most engaging ways to start a project is to show a map. iMovie’s maps can point out a single location or show a travel route for your vacation video.

1.
In the toolbar, click the “Maps, Backgrounds and Animatics” Browser button.

The maps in the browser are broken down in to three categories containing four styles each. The Globe and Map categories are the two that allow you to add travel lines and pinpoint locations.

2.
Drag the Blue Marble Map to the left of the first clip to make the map the first clip in the project.

When you add a map, the Map inspector appears so you can choose a location. In this project, you’ll use the map to highlight Seattle, the location of the glass blowing studio, The Pratt Center.

3.
Click the Start Location button, which currently is set to a location in your time zone.

4.
In the search field, type Seattle. Three matching locations appear in the area below the field.

Tip

Setting an end location will produce an animated line that travels from the start location to the destination when you play the project.

5.
Choose the third entry, Seattle. The bottom of the window displays the text as it will appear on the map. You can customize the text to more specifically identify the location.

6.
Double-click the word “Seattle” in the “Name to Display on Map” text box.

7.
Type The Pratt Center, Seattle Wa, click OK, then click Done in the inspector.

8.
Click the Play button in the lower left of the project window to review the result, and press the Spacebar to stop playback after you’ve seen the map.
