Chapter 2. Installing Windows Home Server > Adding Device Drivers to a USB Key

Adding Device Drivers to a USB Key

As with any OS install, the Windows Home Server Setup program includes a hardware detection phase where it looks for Plug and Play and legacy devices on the server computer and then installs drivers for each device. Most major device manufacturers have Windows Server 2003 drivers, so Windows Home Server Setup should successfully install drivers for the computer’s devices. If you’re not sure about a particular device, or if you want to ensure that Windows Home Server Setup installs a particular driver for a certain device, you can add your own device drivers to a USB flash drive or floppy disk. Just follow these steps:

1.
Insert the USB flash drive or floppy disk, if you haven’t done so already.

2.
Use Windows Explorer to open the drive or disk.

3.
Right-click an empty section of the drive or disk and then click New, Folder.

4.
Type Drivers and press Enter.

5.
Open the Drivers folder.

6.
Open another instance of Windows Explorer, locate your device driver files, and copy them.

Note

Which files do you copy to the Drivers folder? At a minimum, you need the actual driver file or files as well as the associated Setup Information (.inf) file. If the driver is digitally signed, it will also come with a Security Catalog (.cat) file. If you’re not sure which files to copy, download the latest driver package from the manufacturer and look for a “read me” file or some other text file that explains the required files. Otherwise, just copy the entire decompressed package onto the USB key, which should have plenty of room to hold it.

7.
Return to the Drivers folder and paste the device driver files.
