Tightening Things Up with a Second Line of Firewalls

At this point your home network should be up and running and all your network computers should be able to access the Internet using shared access to your high-speed Internet connection. In addition, the personal firewall features built into your router protect your entire network. This section discusses how you can further tighten up your security by adding personal firewalls to each of your network computers.

Cable/DSL routers provide a number of hardware firewall features such as port stealth and the capability to block internal computers from gaining access to the Internet. However, as Table 11.1 shows, there are a number of features provided by software firewalls that are not found in these hardware devices.
