There are very effective and workable methods for getting people to speak with you about someone they know. In fact, they are so obvious that you might even say they are not really techniques. Yet, we assure you, most people trying to check references do not realize these techniques exist, let alone use them. However, before we discuss exactly what these techniques are, let's look at how information is exchanged.

Information flows in a predictable way and is exchanged back and forth on two levels, formally and informally. There is virtually no way that information on the informal level can be controlled, whereas gathering information on the formal level is usually a complicated and tedious task.
