Chapter 15. Special Effects > Special Project: Shape an Envelope like an Object

Special Project: Shape an Envelope like an Object

In Chapter 6, you learned how to make a heart by manipulating a circle's nodes. You can add special emphasis to that heart by adding the word "love" to the heart in a heart-shaped envelope.

To add the word "love" to a heart:

1.
Create the heart as described in Chapter 6 (Figure 15).

Figure 15. Create a heart.

2.
Use the Text Tool to type the word "LOVE." Choose a favorite font and size the text to the width of the heart (Figure 16). (The font used in this example is Apollo MT.)

Figure 16. Create the word "LOVE," then size it to the width of the heart.

3.
Select the Interactive Envelope Tool (Figure 1), then select the text. A rectangular envelope will appear around the text object.

4.
On the Property Bar click the Add Preset button to display a list of pre-designed envelope shapes. Scroll down the list until you find the heart shape (Figure 17).

Figure 17. Select the heart-shaped envelope from the Add Preset drop-down list on the Property Bar.

5.
Click the heart shape. A small heart-shaped envelope will appear around the text (Figure 18) and the text will assume this shape.

Figure 18. When you click the preset heart shape, a heart-shaped envelope appears and the text assumes the envelope shape.

6.
Using the envelope's nodes and control points, reshape the envelope using the heart you created earlier as a guide (Figure 19).

Figure 19. Drag the envelope's nodes and control points to shape the envelope, using the heart as a guide.

7.
When you are finished reshaping the envelope (Figure 20), fill the heart with a favorite color (red is always a good choice for a heart), then fill the type with another color (Figure 21).
