This year we celebrate the 20th anniversary of Painter and the release of Painter 12. The Painter Wow! Book Tenth Edition would not have been possible without a great deal of help from some extraordinary people and sources.

Mark Zimmer created the original Paint Can image for the Painter 1.0 program.

First of all, I am grateful to each of the talented Painter artists who contributed their work and techniques; their names are listed in Appendix D in the back of the book.

Heartfelt thanks go to my friend and colleague Carol Benioff for collaborating with me to create new art for projects in the book. Warmest thanks go to Linnea Dayton, our Wow! Series Editor and a longtime friend and colleague. During all ten editions, her inspiration, wisdom and encouragement were invaluable. Special thanks go to Jill Davis for her brilliant book design, to Cristen Gillespie for her enthusiastic technical editing, to Jennifer Lynn for her helpful copy-editing, to Linda Seifert for her careful proofreading, to Joy Dean Lee for her expert indexing, and to longtime friend and colleague Jonathan Parker, for his careful attention to the production issues. Jonathan’s calm assurance during the deadlines of all ten editions of this book was much appreciated!

John Derry created the Burning Ice Cube for the Painter 2 poster.

Sincere thanks go to my friends at Peachpit Press, especially Ted Nace for his inspiration, Nancy Ruenzel for guidance, Karyn Johnson for her advice, Tracey Croom and Cory Borman for their production advice, Eric Geoffroy for his work on the CD-ROM, Mimi Heft for the beautiful cover design, and the rest of the Peachpit publishing team for their support. Thank you, Peachpit, for giving me the opportunity to write this book.

A big “thank you” goes to the creators of Painter: Mark Zimmer, Tom Hedges and John Derry, for creating such a Wow! program with which we artists can enjoy limitless creativity. Sincere thanks go to my longtime friend John Derry, for his inspiration and encouragement, which have been motivating factors during all editions of The Painter Wow! Book.

My warmest thanks go to Tanya Lux, the Senior Product Marketing Manager and to Andy Church and Steve Szoczei, the Senior Product Manager and User Experience Designer for Painter products, respectively, for their support. I’m also grateful to the Painter 12 Project Manager Lee Gendreau and to the development and QA folks, Vladimir Makarov, Adam Nevraumont, Aliaksandr Piashko, Andrew Carmichael, Caroline Sauvé, Christopher Tremblay Daniel Jetté, Geoffrey Foster, Jeff Paciga, Pascal Bécheiraz, Annabelle Luck, Rina Fougere, Ruby Quesnel, Wendy Cook, Ali Fakhraei and Derek Williams.

Pouring it on with Painter was created for the Painter 3 poster by John Derry.

I’d also like to thank the companies who supplied the Wow! book team with supporting software and hardware during the development of the book. I’m grateful to Adobe Systems for supplying me with Photoshop, so that I could demonstrate how nicely the program works with Painter.

Thanks to Wacom for their great pressure-sensitive tablets and Cintiq pressure-sensitive LCD, and to Epson for color printers for the testing of printmaking techniques.

Thanks to Corbis Images, PhotoDisc and PhotoSpin for their support during all editions of the book; these “stock on CD-ROM and Web” companies allowed us to use their photos for demonstration purposes in the book. I am also grateful to the other companies who provided images or video clips for The Painter Wow! CD-ROM; they are listed in Appendix A in the back of the book.

John Derry created this illustration for the Painter 5 poster.

My warm thanks go to Carol Benioff for sharing her expertise in traditional and digital printmaking. Special thanks go to Dorothy Krause, Helen Golden, Bonny Lhotka and Karin Schminke for sharing their knowledge of experimental printmaking; Jon Lee and Geoff Hull of Fox Television for sharing their experience in designing for broadcast television; Cindy and Dewey Reid of Reid Creative, and John and Joyce Ryan of Dagnabit! for sharing their expertise in animation and film.

A heartfelt thank you to these special “co-workers”: to my husband, Steve, for his encouragement, humor, healthy meals and reminders to take surfing breaks and morning walks together during the project; and to our cats, Pearl, Sable and Marika, the close companions who entertain us and keep me company in the office and studio. Warm thanks go to dear friends Lisa Baker, Susan Bugbee, Elaine Chadwick, Rick Geist, Julie Klein, Michele Jacquin, Donal Jolley, Beth Meyer, Janine Packett and Ian O’Roarty, who shared sincere encouragement and prayers. Thanks for checking in with me while I worked!

Phoenix and Painter at Mount Fuji was created for the Painter 7 poster by Cher Threinen-Pendarvis.

Finally, I would like to thank all the other family, friends and colleagues who have been so patient and understanding during the development of ten editions of this book.
