Chapter 16. Graphic Styles > Editing graphic styles

Editing graphic styles

Beware! If you edit a graphic style, the changes will update on all the objects the style is currently linked to. If you don’t want this to happen, duplicate the style first (see the instructions on the previous page), then edit the duplicate.

To edit a graphic style

1.
Apply the graphic style to be edited to an object, so you’ll be able to preview your edits, and keep the object selected.AB

A Apply the graphic style that you want to edit to an object.

B The Appearance panel displays the attributes for the Arc Lower graphic style (note the topmost listing).

2.
Via the Appearance panel, edit or restack the existing appearance attributes, add new attributes, or delete any unwanted attributes (see Chapter 14).CD For example, you could apply a different solid-color, pattern, or gradient to an existing Fill attribute; create an additional Fill, Stroke, or effect attribute; edit the settings for an existing effect by clicking the effect name; or change the blending mode or opacity by clicking the Opacity link (see Chapter 27).

C We modified the settings for the Warp effect and changed the color for the Stroke and lower Fill attributes.

D This is the object after we edited the style attributes via the Appearance panel.

3.
Do either of the following:

From the Appearance panel menu, choose Redefine Graphic Style “[style name].”

Option-drag/Alt-drag the square from the uppermost left corner of the Appearance panel over the original swatch on the Graphic Styles panel.

Regardless of which method you use, a progress bar may display temporarily, then the style swatch will update to reflect the modifications.A Any objects to which the style is linked will update automatically.B

A The style updates on the Graphic Styles panel.

B The graphic style also updates automatically on any other objects that it’s linked to.

  • While editing a graphic style, be careful not to click other styled objects or graphic style swatches, or your current appearance settings will be lost.
