272 Chapter 20 EXERCISE: Use the Free Distort effect on type 1. Create a type character in an extra or ultra bold font,* approximately 230 pt. in size. Choose the Selection tool (V). 2. On the bottom of the the Appearance panel, click the Add New Fill button. 3. Click the Fill color square and choose a light brown color, or Shift-click the Fill color square to mix a color via a temporary Color panel. 4. Double-click the Stroke color square and click a dark brown swatch. Click the up arrow to change the weight to 7 pt. A A We used the Appearance panel to add a new fill and stroke appearance to a type object. B 5. Double-click the Characters appearance listing, then set both the Stroke and Fill listings to a color of None. 6. Click the Type appearance listing to view the appearance attributes for the type object. Click the Fill listing, then from the Add New Effect menu, choose Distort & Transform > Free Distort. B In the Free Distort dialog, move the top left and right points downward and to the left to slant the fill. Click OK. C To edit the Free Distort settings, expand the Fill listing, then click Free Distort. B The Free Distort effect is nested within, and applies only to, the Fill listing. C The Fill attribute for the type is distorted. (The point type on the bottom has a stroke color and a fill of None.) * If you don't have such a font, choose a bold font, then on the Character panel, increase the Horizontal Scale to around 140%.
