Post-apartheid South Africa has been faced with the challenge attempting to reengineer its political and socio-economic structures to level racial inequalities, to eradicate poverty, to bridge the gap between the rich and the poor, to reduce regional imbalances, and to provide universal access to health care and education. This has proved to be a major challenge for South Africa as indicated by Baskaran, Muchie and Maharajh (2006), "As the legacy of apartheid lingers on, the country is facing many obstacles and the exclusion and division with South African society continue to be major problems" (p. 181). A number of instrumental initiatives and organizations have been established to help with this difficult transition. These have been compiled from the UNESCO database of current development initiative and presented below in Table 1 and Table 2 along brief descriptions and contact information
E-Strategies - Empowering Development, Acacia Initiative, Africa service, African Information Society Initiative (AISI) are key service in place to assist South Africa in developing a technology infrastructure and the ability to use it to leverage education, job opportunities, communications, and economic development
